Brushes & de-shedding tools for Berners

Twice a year your Berner explodes. The rest of the year they shed steadily. Either way, the right tools turn an hour of wrestling into twenty minutes of routine.

The short list

Undercoat rake

Long rounded teeth reach through the topcoat to the loose undercoat — where the actual fur-nado comes from. The single highest-impact tool in this guide.

Slicker brush (large)

Finishes what the rake starts: smooths feathering, catches surface loose hair, and keeps the ears and tail mat-free.

High-velocity force dryer

The groomer's secret weapon for home use. Blasts loose undercoat out after a bath — do it outside unless you enjoy indoor snow.

De-shedding shampoo

Loosens the undercoat in the tub so the dryer and rake have less to fight about. Oatmeal-based formulas are gentlest on Berner skin.

The blowout routine

  1. Bath with de-shedding shampoo, worked down to the skin.
  2. Force-dry outside — watch the undercoat leave in clouds.
  3. Rake through the coat in sections, then finish with the slicker.
  4. Check behind the ears and in the armpits for mats; those hide.
